• 1. Drop it

Hold the shuttle at waist height. Let it fall onto the inside of your foot.

  • 2. Kick it up

Gentle upward tap with the inside of your foot. Knee-height is plenty. Don't swing — tap.

  • 3. Catch the rhythm

Let it drop, kick again. Small kicks. The ting tells you when you caught it clean.

  • 4. Don't stop

That's the whole loop. Then you pass it to someone. Then you're hooked.

  • Solo

Just you, keeping it up. Surprisingly addictive. Great for waiting around.

  • One-on-one

Two people, back and forth. This is where rallies and bragging rights start.

  • The circle

Three or more, in a ring. Keep it alive between everyone. This is how Vietnam plays it.

A few things that help

— Use the inside of your foot, not your toe. More surface, more control.

— Small kicks. Beginners swing too hard. The shuttle does the work.

— Stay relaxed and slightly on your toes. Stiff legs miss.

— Bare feet or flat shoes beat chunky trainers.

— You'll be bad for about ten minutes. Then something clicks. Everyone goes through it.
